Sweaty Saturday

There is so much to do in San Diego, its such a shame to sit at home and not get out there! SO a part of my New Years goals {I don’t like the sound of resolutions} was to take advantage of my weekends and explore my own home town of San Diego.

On Saturday my Mom and I decided to go check out the running trails around Balboa Park.

fullsizeoutput_2e31

Balboa Park is such a gorgeous place and I’ve always enjoyed the architecture surrounding the area. I definitely recommend checking it out if you haven’t had the chance to walk around and explore! There are marked trails and we chose to try for the 4.1 mile stretch or #2 trail. It wasn’t as hard as I expected {AKA I didn’t die} and its always fun to get some sunshine and exercise on a pretty Saturday!

A map of the trails! We took the Yellow #2 trail

After our run we were craving something healthy to top it off so we did a quick search of some juice places in the area. We found on Yelp a place called Juice Alchemy, which was right down the street from the park.

We chose to get the Meanie Greenie & PB+C. Let me tell you, those were SUCH great juice smoothies for after a run! I am definitely going to hit this place up again when I am in the area or if I just need a tasty, healthy refresher. The staff was so sweet and helpful when we were deciding upon what to get! I was afraid the green drink would be not so tasty/bitter but it was DELICIOUS. Also the PB+C was like dessert 🙂

Overall it was such a perfect Saturday afternoon and I felt so refreshed! It is so nice to get out of the apartment on a sunny day and enjoy some exercise and tasty treats with a friend!

Mom and I even took a #SweatySelfie after our run since we were so proud of making it the whole 4 miles!

Okay friends, now its your turn to get out this weekend and get moving!

Let me know what you think or where you are sweating at that I should check out next.

Spot On

il_570xN.893728344_4c88
Happy New Year everyone! Personally I started 2016 out on a high note and things have continued to get better and better! I’ve been hit with a new wave of inspiration and creativity and can’t wait to start putting all my new ideas out on the blog. The first thing I have been wanting to do is start a new segment on spots in San Diego that are my favorites. Living in a city with so much to offer, I’ve been trying to get out there and try new places. I’ve been grabbing my girls and eating/drinking/being merry at these tasty little gems! The first one on my list to share is Fig Tree Cafe. This is THE ideal brunch spot for the girls {or boys} on Sunday morning.

One of the most important things for a place to be Spot On for me is the atmosphere. I love going places where the creators put some effort in making a special place to spend time at. I mean who wants to sit around at a plain jane spot? {not me}. So what makes Fig Tree Cafe so special to me is their atmosphere. My personal favorite location is the Pacific Beach location. Vibes are on point. When you walk in you feel like you are in a hidden little jungle or maybe a tree house. The tables are all placed about among the trees and what makes it extra special is it is pet friendly, so bring your pup to lunch!

What’s on the menu? Breakfast foods, sandwiches, salads, coffees, and cocktails! I can personally speak to how amazing the man candy is. I mean who couldn’t use a little man candy in their life {amiright}. This is basically brown sugar coated bacon and if its even possible to get better they put this little bacony delight in a bloody mary {gasp}. So don’t miss out on this one. If you are feeling some pain from the night before I also recommend getting a flight of antioxidant shots, they’re amazing!

Foodwise I haven’t tried the lunch options, but I have not been disappointed with the breakfast! I loved the soy chorizo scramble, but also have gotten the California omelette and it was on point. Recommendations from friends include the huevos rancheros and breakfast sushi!

Hope you guys go out there and check this spot out if you haven’t already, it won’t disappoint!

Band-Aid: Episode 2

Post concert week and although I am a little tired still I am so happy I made it to see these artists! I previously posted about Monday’s show at House of Blues with Kodaline, and here is a recap from the rest of the week! I can honestly say everyone put on such a good show 🙂 Despite a minor mishap on Thursday night everything went well!

Tuesday: Alt-J and San Fermin at SDSU Open Air Theatre

This was my first time seeing Alt-J and I had high expectations coming in from what I’ve heard from other people who have seen them. First off lets talk about the venue. I’ve never been to the Open Air Theatre {wtf, I know} but I’m kind of obsessed now. I loved being outside and even though our seats were close to the top we still could see really well! Also, it was like a big party there, everyone was dancing and having fun. The atmosphere was great! A special treat was the kid in front of us providing comedic relief all night. I don’t even think his seat was supposed to be there, but between his dancing and groping his friends inappropriately, he was pretty hilarious.

I never heard of San Fermin before and honestly I probably won’t be running out to go see them again. They had an interesting sound and the male lead singer’s voice was unique, but the female lead singer kind of ruined it for me. That’s just my opinion but she didn’t keep up with every one else’s sound live.

Alt-J, however, was amaaaaazing. Their lighting was so on point and they sounded just perfect live. 10/10 would go see again.

Outfit: Since it was outdoors I wasn’t sure about the temperature so I wore a black t-shirt and printed bell bottom pants with wedges

Wednesday: Florence & the Machine at Viejas ArenaIMG_5329

FLORENCE. Omg. She’s perfect and the best concert I’ve ever been to, ever. Her voice is just as powerful, if not more, in person and watching her run all over the stage was unreal. Her energy was infectious, seriously if she is ever in concert near you RUN to get a ticket. I can’t even describe more. She was great, and all you see is this flash of red hair running all over the stage singing like a beast in her trendy little white bell bottoms {exactly what I imagined her wearing!!}. At one point she ran up the aisle-way and jumped ito the crowd. It was so awesome how she connected with her fans and the audience, such a true performer and artist! GO SEE HER!!

Outfit: Kimono, velvet shorts and black booties

Thursday: Gorgon City at House of Blues

IMG_5332

I wasn’t initially planning on this one but when one of my friends invited me to come with her I couldn’t pass it up. I’ve been loving their music lately so I was super stoked to go. Such a close tie for #2 with Alt-J on my favorites list. Gorgon City had so much energy live and they had a male and female singer come out with them, which was super exciting. Overall I loved them! The only mishap {which SUCKED bc we had to miss a little of the show} was when a drunk couple next to us tried to start a fight with my friends and we had to settle things with security. Seriously people lets make this a PSA, if you’re a dude at a club please don’t push a group of girls and elbow them. This guy’s girlfriend was irritated we were around {??? drunk people don’t make sense} so he decided to push us and try to make us leave the dance floor. Stuff like that is why I don’t like being sober around drunk people. I’m seriously still confused on this whole ordeal, but I’m just happy security removed the crazy people from the area and we were able to continue watching the show without any more disturbances!

Overall my week of music is done and I made so many great memories!

Highlights: FLORENCE, dancing with friends to live music, discovering new songs I’m obsessed with

Lowlights: Crazy couple at HOB, how hot/sweaty it was, smelly drunk people

Go get out there and experience new things!

Band-Aid: Episode 1

So, for whatever reason the universe aligned and this week is full of AMAZING artists coming to San Diego. Since I am going to see so many great acts and music this week I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to share with everyone my thoughts on everything. First up was Monday night at the House of Blues. Kodaline headlined with Good Old War opening up. Overall it was a pretty good concert! If you haven’t heard of Kodaline before I highly recommend looking them up and listening to a few songs! {favorite songs: All I Want, High Hopes & Love Like This}.

Since it was a Monday night I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect crowd-wise. Luckily we got there early and had a good spot on the side of the stage where we could see. Since it was a Monday night it never got too crowded, but there was a fair about of teenage girls people there. I say this jokingly, but not really. Demographic there was definitely girls 16-20. They provided some great fashion inspiration, though! Everyone was dressed so cute for a concert it was almost like a little fashion show. Obviously here is where I mention my outfit. Concert-wear is always tricky, but since it was still 87 degrees outside I wore jeans and a white tank to be comfy and hide if I became a sweaty betty {y’all know how it is}.

IMG_5294-1

Honestly I had never heard of the opening band Good Old War before, but they ended up being awesome! Its only two guys and the amount of sound they can produce is amazing. I loved all their songs and they are both great performers, I really felt like they connected with the audience. The main singer is so painfully awkward that he comes full circle and is pretty entertaining. 10/10 for them.

IMG_5296-1

Unfortunately there was a reeeaaally long break between the openers and Kodaline, which really brought the energy down {especially on a Monday}. Not going to lie I started to space out a little in the beginning of their performance, but once they started playing my favorite songs I came back. The real highlight was their encore. They came out and did an acoustic performance including the audience and interacting more. Overall they impressed me! But, I mean can you really go wrong with cute guys from Ireland singing cute love songs? {No, no you can’t}.

Highlights: Kodaline’s Encore; The guys from Good Old War in general

Lowlights: Long pauses; low energy in beginning; this weird smell that was ever-present {was it someone or something}.

Week 1 Update

Days 1-7 are checked off my list and I am really proud of myself and mama for staying on track with our Whole30 eating. Trust me it was not easy, but a week into this and I already am feeling better and healthier. A few things I learned so far about my own eating habits is that I snack A LOT. I noticed this now that I’m eating three meals a day because I didn’t really do that before. I think I was just snacking all day, which has been a hard habit to come out of! But now that I’ve been making three yummy, healthy meals a day I feel more full and don’t have as much of a desire to snack.

IMG_4259

One thing I noticed was that by the end of the day I am more tired and actually ready to crawl in bed. I usually have a problem relaxing and allowing myself to fall asleep at night. Now that I’m a week into this I noticed I’m tired at a decent hour and able to fall asleep after laying down, which before I wasn’t able to sleep until 1-2 am no matter how tired I was. I am really happy with this improvement, yay sleep!

IMG_4256

Another thing I noticed was its actually really easy to make healthy choices when going out with friends and family. On Day 3 it was my Dad’s birthday so we went to a Padres game. Day 3 is a tough day anyway{that was being nice.. Day 3 SUCKS, watch out}, let alone being surrounded by hot dogs and nachos, which are my favs. But, I ended up finding a salad with kale and avocado that was so yummy I almost forgot how bad I wanted to snatch that hot dog out of my Dad’s hands lol. Also, on Day 6 I went to a country concert with friends and tailgated with everyone. I was a little apprehensive about not being able to drink and have fun, but I made myself a “mock-tail” of flavored water and seltzer water and I was just as happy. Plus, being sober around drunk people is GREAT for people watching!

IMG_4254

I’m not going to lie though, I had cravings this week I never usually have. At one point I almost broke down and bought myself some ice cream. I found myself daydreaming of frosting, chocolate, cupcakes, you name it, but like the book said the cravings only last a minute or two so just tough it out!  Also, I was onnee grumpy lady on Days 2-4. I think that was my body’s response to no more sugar. I was a sugarless monster. But, like everything else that phase passed and I’m feeling bright and shiny {that was a grey’s reference}.

Overall this week flew by! Wish us luck on Week 2 of the Whole30!

Whole30

I don’t know about you, but eating healthy and clean always makes me feel like a million bucks. However, it is SO easy to get off track and start eating yucky food because it is “easier”, when in reality a little food prep can go a long way! I can see where I got off track. It all started with getting a late night meal here or there, maybe a soda or a cupcake.. then next thing I know the guy at the drive through recognizes me {that happened}. I kept justifying my eating habits by thinking, “I work out so it cancels out” or “I’ll eat better on Monday”. Well those excuses aren’t going to fly around here anymore!

Today my mom and I are starting a 30 day eating overhaul. It’s called the Whole30 and it focuses on eating healthy food to reset your body. It eliminates junk from your diet like sugars and alcohol {I’ll miss you wine} among a lot of other things and helps you get back on track to a healthy lifestyle and body! It has sooo many benefits from detoxifying {duh}, to reducing inflammation, stress, hormone levels, the list goes on and on! We picked up the book at the local Barnes & Nobel and after reading through it we are obsessed. I know it won’t be an easy task but I am up to the challenge of bettering myself and my life.

I will be updating my blog at the end of each week outlining our experiences along with keeping myself accountable for staying on track!

Let me know if anyone else has tried this lifestyle change or if you want to join us in this month long journey 🙂

The Coffee Diaries- Day 2

Thanks for the well wishes friends, because I needed them. The headache officially set on around 2 pm today and I have been in a fog ever since.

Day two was rough, but I read that 1-3 days is usually the amount of time feeling bad, so there is hope that tomorrow could be better! I didn’t sleep well last night and had crazy vivid nightmares {I wonder if that is due to the lack of caffeine?} I decided to have a cup of green tea in the morning to give me a little boost, since I had a debate in class, but other than that I have been good and stayed away from caffeine!

Things I’ve found helpful combating the groggy feeling:

  • Ibuprofen: this helped ease my headache when the feeling was getting bad
  • Vitamins/Emergen-c: gave me a little boost in the middle of the day
  • Taking a nap: restored a little energy for me to keep awake and into the night

I was a little irritable and groggy today but I am hoping tomorrow will be easier now that I know what to expect!

The Coffee Diaries

Coffee: my personal addiction. It started off innocently enough, a cup here or there to study or stay awake during a late night essay. Then it turned into a morning cup of a light roast to get me going. Next thing I know I’m drinking three cups + a day and ordering a double shot venti iced coffee just to stay alert during one class. There comes a point where you step back and go woah A.) i’m drinking a crapload of coffee and it isn’t affecting me, and B.) I’m spending A LOT of money of coffee. Like no wonder my monthly accounts are looking a little bare.. I am personally stimulating the economy with my excessive coffee addiction.  IMG_1861

I am starting a little series about my week of lessening my coffee intake. Anyone who is currently in college, or went to college probably knows that coffee might as well have it’s own space on the food pyramid. And from how it looks this nasty coffee addiction follows most people into the work place, so this may be something I should get a handle on.

So today {monday} I did a little research and decided that what is best for me is to go cold turkey on actual coffee this week. My goals are to bring down my tolerance to coffee {by not drinking it}, but still use different alternatives for energy {green tea, fruits, etc}. I still don’t mind having coffee in my diet after this week, but I would like to cut down to a cup a day, or even less if I don’t need it. I have heard some pretty scary things about headaches and moodiness when cutting down, but something even scarier are the effects of prolonged high caffeine intake! These include high levels of anxiety, stress, and sleep problems, and those are just a few I have seen around health journals on the internet. Although those are problems for high users of caffeine, moderate caffeine intake does have many health benefits, so I will continue the drink it after I try to lower my tolerance a bit!

On to how I am feeling after Day One. My day has been very busy today, so I didn’t even really have a chance to miss my coffee. I will admit it was a bit of a struggle to get myself up and going today, but I am almost done with my school day and I don’t miss it too bad at this point!

Things that have helped me stay on track today:

  • I have been drinking water all day to keep feeling full and to replace the iced coffee I usually drink through class
  • I had a two hour break where I usually sit around campus and get work done/grab a coffee. I went home instead and worked out for 30 mins {this was my saving grace, I think it gave me the energy boost I needed! }
  • Made it past the 4:00 pm mark without coffee and its a breeze from here, I bet I will be nice and tired tonight

I will let you all know how things go tomorrow! {wish me luck in the morning}
